Purpose:

To provide a one-day advanced informational symposium on the consequences of oropharyngeal dysphagia associated with aging and disease.

Objectives: 

At the completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • identify and contrast differences between normal and abnormal swallowing.

  • define and contrast the two subdivisions of aspiration: event and sources

  • explain the factors necessary for the development of pneumonia in those who aspirate

  • describe why dysphagia is a major symptom and disorder found in the frail elderly

  • identify and assess clinical information and findings that help determine the potential for bacterial pneumonia to develop associated with dysphagia

  • List and describe the core principles of exercise physiology that are required for effective rehabilitation of swallow function.

Intended Audience Only:

Speech-Language Pathologists with with prior knowledge, training, and experience in endoscopic assessment of oropharyngeal swallowing to improve observation, analysis, and interpretation of clinical findings, and to write concise, informational reports. Master’ degree holders or above who are working in the medical community.  Graduate students in their final year of training and who have completed a university dysphagia course may attend. Registration by non-SLP professionals will not be permitted.
